Healthy Working Family Leave Act

You all know by now that Governor Hogan vetoed HB01 – Healthy Working Family Leave Act, and it is unlikely that a special session will be called during which an override vote could be scheduled.    We encourage you to extend your thanks to the Governor for listening to your voice and having the courage to veto this onerous legislation.  SHRM has made sending thanks easy to do.  Just click this link and you can send a standard letter (or customized) to Governor Hogan:


Governor Hogan has charged DLLR Secretary Kelly Schulz with speaking to employers throughout the state to gather more information on the impact to employers that paid leave legislation could have.  It is likely that we are ultimately going to see paid leave legislation  in some form in Maryland - perhaps you can help shape it.    If you are willing to speak on behalf of your employer or know of any employer willing to talk about the impact/concerns regarding this legislation, please provide contact information to Sophia Dobransky (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).  She will compile a list on behalf of the chapter and will submit it to Secretary Schulz via Amanda Haddaway. 


Finally, when the Maryland General Assembly reconvenes on January 10, 2018, there will most likely be a call for an override vote of Governor Hogan’s veto of HB01 – Health Working Family Leave Act.   As we get closer to January,  there will be other recommended actions we can take to influence defeat of the veto override vote and make way for paid leave legislation that is more reasonable.  We will keep you informed.
